A Guide to Lexington, MA Real Estate

Lexington is known as the ‘birthplace of America’, and the mid-sized town has come a long way in the last several centuries. The railroad came to Lexington in the late 19th century, transforming the rural town into a Boston suburb and influencing the way it looks today. The town is home to many beautiful, historic houses representing a number of different architectural styles. There are also several distinct neighborhoods with Lexington homes for sale. Here’s a look at several notable neighborhood where you can find Lexington homes and apartments.

Town Center

At the center of Lexington lies the Battle Green, the site of the first skirmish of the Revolutionary War. While there aren’t too many battles taking place in downtown Lexington these days, this neighborhood continues to be an active and bustling space with a mix of local businesses, medium and large single-family homes, and apartments. Most of the residents here are highly-educated; in fact, just over half of the adults in this neighborhood hold an advanced degree. As a result, many of these residents work in high-level jobs and keep their homes well-maintained, making this one of the wealthiest areas in the country. If you’re looking for multi-million dollar Lexington properties, start here.

East Lexington/Follen Hills

Originally developed as the industrial section of Lexington in the 19th century, East Lexington/Follen Hills is now primarily home to well-maintained medium and large single-family homes. There is an above-average demand for real estate in this neighborhood, so if you’re interested in living here, work with a CENTURY 21 Commonwealth realtor to make sure you find the right Lexington house for you.

Meriam Hill

Meriam Hill is sometimes considered ‘Old Lexington’ due to its many historical (and luxurious) houses. This northeast neighborhood developed during the late 19th century, after the arrival of the railroad caused Lexington’s population to double, and it is characterized by Queen Anne, Victorian, and Colonial Revival style houses.

Loring Hill

If you’re looking for a neighborhood with a lot of visual variety, Loring Hill is for you. Located slightly southeast of the Town Center, Loring Hill boasts a mix of traditional and modern mid-20th century homes, including ranch and multi-level houses. North Lexington

Incorporating part of the Katahdin Woods Conservation area, North Lexington is arguably one of the most scenic neighborhoods in town. In addition to having medium to large single-family homes, this neighborhood also has some small Lexington apartments, many of which have views of the woodlands. The area is particularly popular with highly-educated executives, families with kids, and active retirees.

Countryside/Munroe District

The highly sought-after Countryside and Monroe District neighborhoods are primarily made up of medium to large single-family homes and large apartment complexes, making this neighborhood a potentially good place for growing families and young professionals. One interesting fact about this neighborhood is that an above-average percentage of its residents work from home; the area seems to appeal particularly to people who work in tech or creative industries.
